Last night I really felt myself about to boil over. First of all, it was a long day, not a bad day, just a long day. But by the time I got home, I was pretty tired. I walked in the house and first thing I walked into was a bunch of my kids' shoes. I realized that they hadn't done any of the things I had asked them to do. No problem, I just made them pick everything up. Then, we had some issues in our place with the plumbing. The city has been doing some work. Ok, I get it. So, I make a note to contact maintenance. But then, as I'm washing clothes, and about to move everything to the dryer, the dryer button brakes. Why is this happening, why is nothing seeming to go in the direction I'm moving in. Everything is holding me up this evening. I feel myself about to just... I dunno scream or cry or something...Frustration. Maybe you've had a day or even a night like this. Little things becoming big things and getting on your nerves. FRUSTRATION.
How do we deal with frustration when it comes up? For me, I started to feel like everything was falling apart. Not life, just the house and we just moved in a few months ago. What happens in those moments? Well, if we are listening closely, God speaks to our heart. In that moment, where things started to boil over, God reminded me of his word and he said, "Set not your affection on things of the earth where moth and rust doth corrupt, where thieves break in and steal, but set your affection on things above." Now, I know that this statement combines 2 bible verses, but this is how God said it to me in the moment. And, it made me really think about the meaning of the 2 scriptures here. "Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. (Matthew 6:19-21 KJV)." "If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. (Colossians 3:1-2 KJV)." These scriptures helped to calm my spirit in the moment. For the first time, I really took in the meaning of these verses. The heart is directly connected to our emotions. When we love someone, for example, and they break up with us or do something that really throws us into a loop, we get all depressed and sad and we're crying all over the place, we start to question what we did wrong. Our heart is connected to the person. When you get a new car and someone deliberately scratches it, just scratches a long line right across the driver's side of your car, making sure that you see it. You get angry, heated, boiled over, some of you may even want to fight. You heart is connected to your car. Often times we will comment, "My heart hurts." What is your heart connected to? What causes you pain or grief? What causes your day to go well or not go well? Are you setting your affections on things above? As I thought about the statement in the moment, I also thought about Elijah (I Kings 19) Now, my situation wasn't even close to Elijah's. I mean he was running for his life from a crazy Queen, Jezebel. But sometimes, in the moment of breaking, God does something. He gives us time to rest, eat, drink water, and hear his voice. So, that's what I did. I made a plate of spaghetti, I drank a glass of water, I sat down and I read a few chapters in the book of Isaiah (which I'm currently reading through). Needless to say, I felt so much more calmer and I went to bed early. A good ending to a rough night and a tiresome day. I know that we are all human and it's hard not to get upset over random things that happen in our lives. Sometimes we don't look for trouble, but trouble finds us. Well, in the moment try to put your mind on the Saviour. Put your mind on God and His Word. Eat some food, drink some water, rest, and read your Bible. You may be surprised at how much it helps. Hope your day is a peaceful one, Lakisha B.
